I don’t mean ladies ‘green up’ and go networking, i mean a networking group that’s going to be green for the night! the lovely lady that is Emma James is letting me take hold of one her end of month events for Thirsty Thursday.
We’re taking the theme of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle at Manchester235.
Reducing airmiles - a local florist called Northern flower will be there to show us how we can have sustainable arrangements.
Reusing - there’s a stylist to show us how to reuse a peice of clothing that we has consigned to the bin
Recycle - Julia Roy Williams will be there with her recycled jewellry.
On top of all this there will be Origins pampering, free wine, locally produced food, prizes and gambling!

A shameless bit of plugging of a film wot my bruvver made.
It’s based around the story of Danny a deaf kid growing up in the city and the daily challenges he faces. The film was premeeeeered last night to a deaf audience to much applause, it was even mentioned in Dr Jim Kyle’s keynote speech at the Centre for Deaf Studies 30th anniversary address - wooo, get him.. it’s a step forward from making pop videos with puppets…
It’s a fairly well known that i’m a fan of the lovely people that are Innocent drinks.
I love them: FACT
Not only do they produce lovely drinks but they are also hot on green issues and the head poncho Richard Reed was interviewed by The Times for the Green Rush:
In the name of research i have decided to sacrifice my lunch break of eating a sandwich over my computer and fecking about on Facebook to go and sample the culinary delights of The Crown and Anchor on Hilton St with my mate Sarah who works at True North www.thisistruenorth.co.uk
She says there is a new cook who does lots of veggie stuff.. lets see if i can be tempted away from a jacket, beans and cheese….
My mate Lisa works at Yudu who specialise in digital editions, they have just produced a very helpful guide on how you can make changes to be a little more greener and save money. A very cool little booklet!
RIGHT, i’ve written this post 3 times now and each time it keeps dissappearing, this is the last time i’m doing it alright? So if you’re not reading this then you’re missing out and i’m writing to no-one. hmmm.
Anyway, here’s the link i wanted you to see.
It’s a video that Flame Digital shot for their client Holiday Extras with comedian Paul Kaye.
As part of the many green groups the MD belongs to, this one made a bit of a Monday impact - when one has that dred of monday going to work feeling - i think this girl put this into perspective… it’s a bit cheesy but you can see what she’s saying like!
Sinclair Beecham, the co-founder of ethical sandwich chain Pret a Manger, plans to bring his “budget boutique” hotel model to Manchester. The Hoxton Hotel, billed as an “urban lodge”, opened in September 2006, offering food and drink at high street prices, some luxuries and a sliding scale of room prices starting at £1 for the first five rooms booked on any given night. Beecham plans to bring the concept to the Northern Quarter, where developer Argent is leading the city council’s plans to sell the area as the city’s bohemian quarter. Beecham is reported to have funding in place for the roll-out programme across ten sites.

The stinky little anchovy that people tend to hate or love is now unsustainable! Who’s been ordering double on thier pizzas hmmm?
Seriously though, the anchovy population has been struggling since 2002 and in 2004 suffered a complete collapse in The Bay of Biscay and though still legal to fish just of the coast of Portugal, they are now restricted amounts.
In a report by the MCS (Marine Conservation Society), hundreds of types of fish have been awarded a ranking from 1-5 considering biology, stock status, management and imapct of farming or farming methods. Amongst 69 others, Monkfish from North and North West Spain, North sea Cod and dogfish recieved the worst ranking of 5, it’s also worth trying to avoid Atlantic Salmon, skate and swordfish.
The slightly complicated issue over how fish is caught and the fact that one type can be labelled as unsustainable if caught in one area and not if caught in another, coupled with this lack of public information is leading to consumer confusion and headaches for the stores trying to fit a large amount of information on one little tin - and realistically, who has the time to stand and read all this information when going for the monthly Big Shop? I’m sure people (like myself and probably at the annoyance of my partner) would actually take the time to do this - but i suspect a majority will not… will they think twice before order extra anchovies on thier 14″ Meat Feat with Suffed Crust?
I’m just about to traipse across town to go to a networking event with some trepidation.
Due to one reason or the other Naturals’ business cards haven’t arrived yet (i will sing hosannah when they do) so my reservation is this: will people think Natural Events is a little bit noddy if i don’t have any to shell out to eeryone who thrusts theirs into my paws, or actually is it a good way of getting other peoples contact details so you can make sure you are the one to contact them and not be hassled by pushy sales people?
I will ponder this then as i get soaked walking down Deansgate….
